Cutler and Gross – The New British Brand at Specs Direct!
Saturday December 30, 2023
As the optometrist and owner of Specs Direct Opticians I recently embarked on an eyewear adventure that was nothing short of a spectacle (pun intended!). You might remember my affection for Lindberg which are Danish, minimalist design glasses – sleek, understated, and so unobtrusive they could’ve been invisible. I’ve rocked the same design in two colours for two years, flaunting them in newsletters like a proud dad showing off his kids’ art on the fridge.
But then, British flamboyance strutted into my life in the form of the new Cutler and Gross collection. These frames were the sartorial equivalent of a rock concert next to my quiet, minimalist jazz. Heavier, bolder, and screaming ‘look at me!’ in matt black. When I tried them on, I felt an inexplicable transformation – like Clark Kent stepping into a phone booth, but instead of a cape, I got these audacious specs.

(Here is me and the Cutler and Gross Ambassador choosing the best eyewear designs in the collection!)
I sought my team’s opinion, expecting a range of reactions. To my surprise, their unanimous “looks great!” felt like a standing ovation at a fashion show.
When I donned the bold Cutler and Gross frames for the first time, seeking the opinion of my team wasn’t just a mere formality – it was a crucial step. Their ‘looks great’ wasn’t just any compliment; it was an expert endorsement. You see, my team isn’t just skilled in making accurate measurements in optical dispensing; they are connoisseurs of eyewear fashion, maestros in the art of styling glasses to perfection. Their collective nod of approval added significant weight to my decision, like a seal of style from a panel of judges at a high-fashion event. It was the reassurance I needed that my new look wasn’t just a change, but an upgrade, a step into a bolder, more confident persona.
Their expertise in eyewear styling isn’t just about understanding the trends; it’s about knowing what complements a face, a personality, an attitude. So, when they unanimously agreed that the new frames were a hit, it was more than just a green light – it was an affirmation that this new look was a perfect fit for the many hats (or should I say glasses?) I wear.
I ordered them faster than a superhero flies to the rescue, excited as a kid on Christmas Eve.
When the glasses finally graced my face, it wasn’t just about what I saw in the mirror – it was about the looks I got. My patients’ eyes widened in curiosity, then sparkled with admiration. I felt like a bizarre hybrid of Clark Kent and Colin Firth from The Kingsman Fellowship – an odd, yet surprisingly chic combo.

The real litmus test, however, was at home. My daughter saw them as a symbol of fearlessness, art, and fashion – a teenager’s stamp of approval is no small feat! My wife, on the other hand, seemed to be sizing up this new man who had replaced her minimalist-loving husband. Her look said, “Who are you and what have you done with my husband?”
It reminded me of a recent article by Adrian Chiles in the Guardian on his eyewear escapades. It struck a chord – glasses aren’t just about vision; they’re about perception, both self and others’. Sure, everyone has an opinion, but when it comes to glasses, it’s the wearer’s view that tops the charts. So, here I am, navigating the world with my new look, feeling like a secret agent with the power of sight!
But here’s the thing – it’s not just about having one look. My recent foray into the bold world of Cutler and Gross frames doesn’t mean I’m abandoning my sleek, minimalist Danish Lindberg glasses. Oh no, I’m all about having options. Just like one might choose between a classic black tuxedo or a daring velvet suit, I switch between my Lindberg glasses, channeling the likes of refined personalities who prefer understated elegance, and my audacious Cutler and Gross frames, for when I feel like adding a dash of boldness to my look. It’s like having a wardrobe of eyewear, each pair catering to a different facet of my personality.
