Autumn Driving

Helpful Tips for Autumn Driving.

Autumn has arrived. The days are definitely getting shorter and the clocks have changed so many more of us will be driving in the dark. One of the problems patients mention frequently is the difficulty they experience with night driving. I can understand this as I also suffer from night driving difficulties. There are a few things which may help the situation.

Clean the windscreen and your glasses before driving at night:

The most common reason for haloes and reflections is a dirty windscreen (both inside and out). In the same way scratched or dirty spectacles can contribute to unwanted scattered light; so can condensation on any of these surfaces. It is a good idea to always clean your windscreen and spectacles before night driving.

Road Lighting:

Road lighting levels at night are obviously lower than those found by day. This causes the pupil of the eye to become larger during night driving than under brighter conditions and the increase in pupil size can accentuate any existing small errors in focussing, causing a blur. If you notice such a blur, your current spectacles or contact lenses may need updating.

New Kodak Drive lens to Eliminate Glare from LED Car Headlights:

There is evidence to suggest that modern headlights are brighter than they have ever been. This increases our difficulty with night driving glare. The use of LED lights in car headlights is very popular with car manufacturers due to their energy efficiency compared to a traditional halogen bulbs which have a softer, yellow tone to the light.

LED light is more directional. Rather than being a big spread of light which comes from a halogen bulb LED light is more focussed. It is also a traditionally brighter light which is blue white in colour, hence why it appears brighter in the dark.

The rise in drivers feeling dazzled by the light is probably down to the shift in technology to try and address the problem with night driving glasses.

Kodak Drive Lenses are twice as effective as standard lenses in addressing this problem.

There is a new lens which has just been launched called the Kodak Drive Lens. This offers significantly less glare from oncoming vehicles, traffic and street lights. The special coating looks different and is twice as good as a normal anti reflection coating. It is a luxury that is worth considering as a special driving lens or can also be used in all light conditions
